I believe you can leave it plugged in continuously while not using, because as the voltage numbers showed to me that it does "float" charge, contrary to some review comments , and info from HF that states to charge it every 30 days while not in use, which is a fine. My guess is an overly cautious liability concern by HF or manufacturer. I took readings from the 12v cigarette outlet (which nowhere in the ad does it say it has one). After initial charge and subsequent charges, when the jump starter reads "full", and still plugged in, the voltage reads 13.6 to 13.7 volts which is perfect float charge range and the voltage remains stable. When unplugged the battery slowly reduces to more like 13v which is normal. Also in the owner's manual, nowhere does it warn you NOT to leave it plugged in. BTW, I have no idea yet if it will successfully jump my big V8 truck engine. I haven't experienced the "used it once or twice" and it doesn't work anymore as a few have mentioned. Plenty of power to jump start almost anything. We will see if it ends up going kaput, but so far it has been rock solid.
